Thai Etiquette for Giving to Elders
Handing It Over
Hand the gift over with both hands and a slight bow; if the elder is seated, ไหว้ (wai, palms pressed together) before and after, and use the right hand only when one hand can't be avoided.
What to Avoid
By Thai belief, three gifts are best left out for elders: clocks, which suggest counting down time, shoes, which suggest walking away, and sharp objects, which suggest cutting ties.

Colours
Gold and yellow are the safest wrapping colours in Thai custom.
Red is the colour of luck in Chinese tradition, which many Thai-Chinese families follow, and black is best kept off the wrapping.

What budget works for a senior at work?
A Thai gift guide suggests 500 to 1,500 baht for most elders and 1,500 to 3,000 for those you especially respect. Malai Petite Corporate & Diplomatic at 1,590 sits in the upper band, and Malai Glin Rak at 499 is a small thank-you just under the lower one.
Can an expensive gift for a senior at work look like overstepping?
It can. Thai has a phrase for it, เกินหน้าเกินตา (going beyond one's place), and one Pantip thread uses it about a birthday gift for a boss. A meaningful piece at a modest price settles the question.
How much can a Thai government official accept as a gift?
Under the 2020 announcement of the ป.ป.ช. (National Anti-Corruption Commission), an official may accept up to 3,000 baht per person per occasion from anyone who isn't a relative. Above that, they must report it to their superior within 30 days.
The rule also covers people who left office less than two years ago, and gifts from relatives are exempt.
When do you give a phuang malai (garland) to an elder?
Traditionally at festivals such as New Year and Songkran, as the Royal Society of Thailand notes. Our garlands are also made for other moments with elders, from a birthday to a retirement.
One tip for your card: the word is พวงมาลัย (phuang malai, garland), and พวงมาลา (phuang mala, a wreath) is the word to avoid.
How do you choose a lucky colour by birthday?

Most garlands take 10 to 20 business days, Malai Glin Rak and the turtle keychain 5 to 10, The Elephant Net and The Crocodile Fragrance about a month, Malai Empress and Malai Princess Purity up to a month, and Malai Queen Purity can take more than two months.
