Handmade Cotton Phuang Malai, How to Choose the Right One
In Thailand a garland marks the moments that matter: a guest welcomed, a teacher thanked, a graduate congratulated, a couple blessed by their parents. Every phuang malai in this collection is threaded by hand in cotton by Akha artisans in Asha village, Chiang Rai, so the gift is kept and the moment remembered forever, instead of fading away by the next morning.
The collection runs in four lines, at four levels of craft. Here is how to find the right one.
The four lines
Purity, the lotus line
The white lotus stands for a pure heart, spiritual awakening and the path toward the light, which makes it the form for blessings, ordinations, graduations and gifts to a mother. It runs from the Malai Purity Petite in white or red, through the Malai Purity Supreme, to the Malai Purity Princess and the Malai Queen Purity.
Flowers, the dried flower line
A traditional garland is threaded from flowers chosen for what they mean: jasmine for pure love, dok rak whose name is love, marigold for prosperity. The Flowers line keeps that vocabulary in real dried flowers and cotton, with gold and silver detailing, from the Malai Petite Flowers and Malai Supreme Flowers up to the Malai Flowers Princess and the Malai Delicacy, in which every flower is woven by hand.
Thai diffusers
A garland that carries scent as well as meaning, made to stand or hang where you actually spend your hours. Malai Serenity reverses the tradition so the garland cradles the phan, which holds the stone for your essential oil. Baan Bua roofs your home in a lotus leaf, with a Pla Ta Pian fish for each person you love. Malai Glin Rak is the piece to hang in a car or on a door, in eight colours.
Khruang Kwaen, Thai hanging ornaments
The hanging craft that once decorated Thai palaces and ceremonial halls, brought back in cotton. Ta Khai Na Chang, Klin Chorakhe and the Thai chandelier belong to a form almost nobody still makes by hand. To understand where it comes from, read what khruang kwaen is.

Four levels of craft
Classics
Our everyday pieces, made in the traditional proportions and finished to the same standard as the rest. This is where most gifts belong: the Malai Cuty for Mother's Day, the Malai Saffron for a teacher or a mentor, the Malai Petite in the seven day-of-birth colours, and the Malai Uba, the single hanging strand.
Diplomatic
Made to carry your colours. The belt, or the whole garland, is finished in a national flag or a corporate identity, for official visits, delegations, partnership signings and client gifts. Choose the Malai Petite Corporate & Diplomatic for a restrained piece where only the belt carries your colours, or the Diplomatic & Corporate Malai for the full ceremonial version.
Signature
Ceremonial pieces, worked at a scale and a density of detail the smaller sizes cannot carry. In Thai custom the work in a garland is read as the depth of the respect behind it, which is why ceremonial pieces have always been the most elaborate. The Malai Empress, Malai Purity Princess, Malai Flowers Princess and Malai Delicacy are made to order for the occasion that happens once.
Maison
The highest level we make, and the pieces that take the longest. The Malai Queen Purity is a commission rather than a purchase, made for a moment that will be remembered for a generation.
Choosing by occasion
Welcoming a VIP guest or a delegation
A garland placed in a guest's hands says the day was prepared for them. Hotels greeting arrivals, companies receiving visiting executives and teams marking a retirement all rely on it. The Diplomatic & Corporate Malai is our piece for official visits, the Malai Prestige Gold carries the colour Thai custom holds most auspicious, and the Malai Prestige Silver the same stature in silver.
Graduation
Graduation photographs last for decades, and so should what is in them. The Malai Purity Petite, the Malai Purity Supreme and the Malai Chaad all suit the day, and move from the graduate's shoulders to a shelf at home afterwards.
Mother's Day
On 12 August, Thailand gives its mothers a garland. Light blue is the colour of the day, because Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother was born on a Friday. The Malai Cuty is our Mother's Day piece. To understand what each flower means, read our guide to Mother's Day flowers.
Weddings
At a Thai wedding the garland is offered to the parents and to the elders whose blessing the couple is asking for, presented in both hands. That form is called a malai kon, and it carries more weight than any bouquet. The Malai Delicacy and the Malai Flowers Princess are made for exactly this moment, and both can be woven in your wedding colours.
A new car
A new car in Thailand is greeted with garlands for Mae Ya Nang, the guardian of the vehicle, in the colour of the owner's day of birth. The Malai Petite comes in all seven day colours, and Malai Glin Rak is made to hang from the mirror. Our guide explains how many garlands and which colour.
Questions people ask
How long does a cotton phuang malai last compared to fresh flowers?
A fresh garland lasts a day, less in Thai heat. A cotton garland keeps its shape and colour for years, so it can be displayed at home or kept as a memento of the day.
Can I choose the colours?
Yes, every piece can be made in custom colours. Gold and yellow are auspicious in Thai custom, red reads as Chinese and celebratory, light blue belongs to Mother's Day, and every person has the colour of the day they were born. Tell us the occasion and we will suggest a palette with you.
How much does a handmade phuang malai cost?
The collection starts at ฿499, most gifts sit between ฿1,290 and ฿2,690, Signature pieces run from ฿4,555 to ฿7,990, and the Maison piece is ฿12,000. For quantities we work by quotation, with volume pricing and no minimum order.
Is a cotton garland appropriate for a real Thai ceremony?
For honouring a person, yes. You present it exactly as you would a fresh one, and it stays with them afterwards. For a daily offering on a Buddha altar, fresh flowers remain the tradition, and we say so plainly in our guide to offering flowers at an altar.
Do you take corporate and bulk orders?
Yes, with no minimum order quantity, custom colours, and engraving on the wooden boxes. Every piece is made to order by Akha women in Chiang Rai.
