The flowers a phuang malai is made from
Malai Delicacy recalls the flowers a Thai garland has always been threaded from. Each one was chosen for its meaning, not its looks:
- Jasmine for pure love. Its white colour, its lasting scent and its inward-curling petals are read as a mother's arms around her child, which is why it became the flower of Mother's Day.
- Dok rak, whose name means the flower of love.
- Dok phut for a calm and gentle heart.
- Rose for gratitude and admiration.
- Marigold for prosperity, which is why it appears in almost every Thai offering.
- Orchid for refinement and strength.
Fresh, these last a morning. Woven in cotton, they keep their shape and their colour for years, which is the point of this piece.
Why a garland at a Thai wedding
At a Thai wedding the garland is offered to the parents and to the elders whose blessing the couple is asking for, presented in both hands. It is the gesture that carries the most weight in Thai ceremony, which is why it outranks a bouquet.
The difference with a woven garland is what happens afterwards. A fresh one is finished by the evening. This one goes home with them, and it is still in the house at the anniversary.

Choosing your colour
It comes in sky blue, and sky blue carries grace and harmony. It is also the colour of Friday, and the colour of Mother's Day, which makes it the natural choice when the garland is for the mothers at the wedding.
Beyond that, two ways to choose:
- Your wedding theme. Tell us your palette and we weave to it.
- The recipient's day of birth. Sunday red, Monday yellow, Tuesday pink, Wednesday green, Thursday orange, Friday light blue, Saturday purple. A garland in someone's own birth colour says you chose it for them.
Gold and yellow suit any occasion and carry prosperity and honour. Keep black away from a wedding entirely; it belongs to mourning.
