Malai Serenity - A Thai Diffuser

▶ Pre-order only.

For centuries the phuang malai has carried Thai protection, but bound to the spirit house.

Malai Serenity sets that blessing free.

Resting on two invisible feet, it stands wherever you hold most dear: your desk, your bedside, the corner that matters most.

And in a quiet reversal, the Malai now cradles the "phan" (พาน) rather than the other way round, holding the semi-precious stone of your choice, onto which you spray your essential oil.

An elegant gift to express gratitude and to wish serenity, made to be where you need it most.

How to use it

  1. Choose your place. A desk, a bedside table, an entrance, the corner of a room you pass every day.
  2. Spray your essential oil onto the stone. A few drops are enough.
  3. Let the stone hold the scent. Porous stone releases it slowly, so the room carries it rather than the bottle.
  4. Refresh when the scent fades, usually every few days, and change the oil whenever you want the room to feel different.

No electricity, no reeds to replace, no liquid to spill. The stone and the garland do the work.

Why the phan sits inside the garland

The phan is the footed tray Thailand uses to raise an offering: flowers, incense, a garland presented to a teacher. Whatever is placed on it is lifted, literally and in meaning.

Normally the garland rests on the phan. Here it is reversed. The malai cradles the phan, and the phan holds the stone that carries your scent.

It is a small inversion with a point behind it: what is being raised and cared for is no longer the offering, but the space you live in and the calm you want in it.

Freed from the spirit house

A phuang malai has always carried protection in Thailand, but almost always in one place, at the spirit house, at the altar, at the front of a car.

Malai Serenity stands on two hidden feet, so it needs no hook, no shrine, no wall. It goes where you actually spend your hours. That is the whole idea: the blessing follows the person rather than the building.

When to give it

  • A housewarming or a new office, as a wish for calm and good fortune in a new space.
  • A thank you, when you want to express gratitude with something that stays in view.
  • Someone under pressure, a colleague, a friend, a parent, who would benefit from one calm object on the desk.
  • A corporate or client gift, for a recipient who has enough hampers.

A note on the stone

Semi-precious stones carry meanings in many traditions, and people choose them for that reason. Those meanings come from belief and custom, not from science, and we make no claim about the properties of any stone. Choose the one you like the look of, or the one that means something to you.

How to care for it

  • Handle it gently. Cotton is delicate. Keep handling to a minimum.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight. Direct sun fades cotton. A shaded spot keeps the colour.
  • Keep it dry, apart from the oil on the stone. Damp causes mould, which damages cotton.
  • Spray the stone, not the cotton. Essential oils can stain fabric.
  • Dust it regularly with a soft brush or a cloth.

Cared for properly, it stays beautiful in its place for many years.
