What Is a Coaster, and What Do Thai People Call It?
A coaster is the small mat you put under a glass or a coffee cup, to catch the condensation running down the outside before it reaches the table.
In Thai it goes by three names that all mean the same object: ที่รองแก้ว, จานรองแก้ว and แผ่นรองแก้ว.
In English you will also see it written as a drink coaster.
It is the most overlooked object on the table, and the one that decides whether your wooden table has white rings on it in two years.
Which Coaster Material Actually Absorbs? An Honest Comparison
If you are shopping for an absorbent coaster, the material is the only thing that really matters. Here is the straight comparison, including where cotton loses.
- Cotton. The most absorbent of the group, because the water goes into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it. Silent when you put a glass down, light, and washable indefinitely. The limits: not for very hot dishes, and coffee or red wine will stain if left to dry. Wash it soon and it lifts out.
- Ceramic and diatomite stone. Genuinely absorbent and good looking, but heavy, noisy when a glass lands, and they break when dropped.
- Cork. Light and cheap, but it frays and discolours with use.
- Wood. Durable and handsome, but it barely absorbs anything. The water pools on the surface and reaches your table anyway.
- Silicone and acrylic. Waterproof, easy to rinse, inexpensive. But they do not absorb, and they read as disposable rather than as something in your home.
Short version: if you want real absorbency that lasts, cotton wins. If you regularly put very hot items down, buy ceramic or wood instead. We do not make something that solves every problem, and we would rather not claim we do.
How to Care for Cotton Coasters
- Hand wash in cool or warm water with a mild soap
- For coffee, tea or wine, wash while the stain is still wet. It lifts far more easily
- Squeeze the water out gently, do not wring hard, and dry in the shade
- No ironing needed. Knotted cotton returns to shape as it dries
- Every piece is handmade, so sizes vary slightly and no two are identical. That is the nature of handwork, not a defect
