Congratulations and Promotion Gifts in Thailand: 11 Meaningful Ideas for Men, Women and Elders

ของขวัญแสดงความยินดี - Macrame by Nicha blog Award Ceremony

In Thailand, a good ของขวัญแสดงความยินดี (congratulations gift) or ของขวัญเลื่อนตำแหน่ง (promotion gift) carries a wish for the new role, such as a gold garland, believed to bring success, or a silver one, believed to bring money.

Below are 11 ideas sorted by that wish and by who is giving, for men, women and elders, from 390 to 4,555 baht, with our handmade pieces first.

We are Macrame by Nicha, and our pieces are handmade by Akha women through Akha Ma-De, our social program that creates jobs in Asha village, Mae Yao district, Chiang Rai, and empowers the Akha community.

How to Choose a Congratulations Gift

Choose by the wish first, then check who is giving, the rules for officials and the lead time.

Meaning Before Price

Start with the wish, then look at the price. The garlands in this guide carry their wish in their names: success, money flowing in, a new chapter of life or lasting cooperation.

Colour carries a wish too. Our New Year guide has a section on gift colours in Thailand.

Who Is Giving to Whom

From family, a premium garland can stay at home as a keepsake of the promotion.

From colleagues or a junior team, one small piece each keeps it light, under 500 baht.

From a company to a business partner, a garland in your corporate colours marks the new role and the work you share.

If the person promoted is your boss, see our gift ideas for your boss.

Giving to a Government Official: the 3,000 Baht Ceiling

If you are a state official and the person promoted is your superior, a customary gift to a superior is capped at 3,000 baht per giver per occasion. The cap comes from Thailand's gift regulation for state officials, ระเบียบ (regulation) 2565 (2022), in force since 14 January 2023.

The same regulation asks officials to congratulate in other ways in place of a gift, and says they may not collect money to buy a superior's gift.

On the receiving side, the 2563 (2020) rule of the ป.ป.ช. (National Anti-Corruption Commission) lets an official accept up to 3,000 baht per person per occasion from anyone other than a relative. It names congratulations, thanks, a welcome and courtesy among the occasions for such gifts.

So the Malai Prestige Gold and Malai Prestige Silver (3,090 baht each) and the Malai Empress (4,555) are above 3,000 baht and suit a gift from family, or for someone outside government. For an official, choose from the pieces under 3,000 baht.

Order Ahead

Our pieces are handmade, so send us the date as soon as the new position is announced. Lead times run from 5 working days for keychains to about a month for The Elephant Net and up to a month for the Malai Empress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we pool money with colleagues for a promotion gift?

If you are state officials and the gift is for your superior, no. Thailand's 2565 (2022) gift regulation says officials may not collect money to buy a gift for a superior. Each of you may still give your own customary gift, up to 3,000 baht per occasion.

How much can a civil servant accept as a gift?

Up to 3,000 baht per person per occasion from anyone other than a relative, under the 2563 (2020) rule of the ป.ป.ช. (National Anti-Corruption Commission). Above that, the official must report it to their superior within 30 days.

For a gift to a superior, the 2565 regulation sets the same 3,000 baht per giver per occasion. Every idea in this guide fits within it except the Malai Prestige Gold, the Malai Prestige Silver and the Malai Empress.

Can you engrave a message or add a company logo?

We engrave messages on the Malai Glin Rak box, by quotation. For a company, the Diplomatic & Corporate Malai comes in national flag colours or your corporate identity colours, including a custom version, with a wooden box.

For a logo, send it with your quotation request and tell us which piece you have in mind.

How long does an order take?

Keychains and the Malai Glin Rak take 5 to 10 working days. The Malai Prestige Gold, Malai Prestige Silver, Malai Marigold, Malai Petite Purity Red and Diplomatic & Corporate Malai take 10 to 20.

The Elephant Net takes about a month and the Malai Empress up to a month, so send the date early.
