Thai Wedding Gifts: What to Give the Couple, and What to Put in the Envelope
The invitation has been sitting on your desk for a week, the wedding is in ten days, and you still have not decided. That is the normal state of affairs.
Choosing a wedding gift (ของขวัญแต่งงาน) for a friend or a work colleague in Thailand is not really one decision, it is three: how much goes in the envelope, whether you bring anything at all on top of it, and whether the thing you bring will still be in their home a year from now.
This guide answers all three, in that order, because that is the order guests actually get stuck in. There are twelve ideas further down, grouped so you can jump to the one that fits your budget.
But the envelope comes first, since for most guests that is the part with real money attached and the part nobody explains properly.
How to choose a wedding gift (ของขวัญงานแต่ง) the couple will keep

Three questions settle it faster than browsing does.
How close are you, honestly? Not how close you would like to seem. A colleague you sit near, a university friend you see twice a year and a sibling are three different budgets, and the couple already knows which one you are.
Do they already have a home together? A couple who has lived together for three years owns the kettle, the towels and the toaster. Homeware is the safe default that four out of five guests reach for, which is exactly why it is the group most likely to be duplicated.
Can it get home from the venue? Somebody has to carry it. A large decorative piece handed over at 11pm at a hotel reception becomes the couple's problem, not their present.
There is also one idea worth borrowing from Thai merit convention, and it is a genuinely useful filter: ถวายของเป็นคู่, giving things in pairs. หมอนคู่ (a pair of pillows), แจกันคู่ (a pair of vases), เชิงเทียนคู่ (a pair of candlesticks).
The pair reads as a wish for two people staying together. It is not compulsory and it does not fit every gift, but when a gift comes as a pair, or is a single piece made for two people, it tends to land better at a wedding than the same thing bought singly.
How much to put in the wedding envelope
Start with the anchor rule, not the table: your envelope should at least cover what the couple paid to feed you. IMPACT puts 2026 wedding catering at around THB 1,100 per head.
So at a hotel or convention centre reception, an envelope under a thousand baht means, in plain arithmetic, that the couple bought you dinner.
Above that floor, both Praew and IMPACT independently arrive at the same guideline: 2 to 5 percent of your monthly income, adjusted up for how close you are to the couple and for how expensive the venue is.
Venue cost is the only adjustment worth making, and yes, the bigger evening receptions are usually the expensive ones.
| Relationship | Envelope (THB) |
|---|---|
| Acquaintance | 500 |
| Colleague | 500 to 1,000 (sources disagree, so treat it as a range) |
| Close friend | 2,000 |
| Sibling or close relative | 2,000 and up |
If you would rather work from your own stage of life than from the relationship, IMPACT sets a simple ladder: 500 to 1,000 for first jobbers, 1,000 to 3,000 mid career, 3,000 to 5,000 for senior people. Both ways of counting land in the same place, which is reassuring.
On amounts themselves, some people prefer even numbers for a wedding envelope. That is ความเชื่อ, not a rule, and only some sources mention it at all. If it matters to you, round to an even figure and stop thinking about it.
Now the part most guides get wrong. A gift is an alternative to the envelope, not an addition to it. Thai guidance presents the gift as what you bring when you are not sure how much to put in, not as something you stack on top of a full envelope.
So the envelope is the default and the safe choice. A gift is either instead of it, or alongside a smaller envelope when you are close enough to want something personal with your name on it. Nobody is expecting both at full value.
And here is the mechanism that explains why cash never quite goes away. Many Thai families open the envelopes after the wedding, count them, and write down who gave how much, so that when that guest holds their own event the family can return the same amount.
Your envelope is being recorded. That sounds intimidating and is actually the opposite: it means an envelope is never wasted, it comes back to you later, and it explains why a beautiful gift with no envelope at all can quietly leave a gap in somebody's notebook.
12 wedding gift ideas (ของขวัญแต่งงาน) for the couple
Keepsakes that last
This is the group that survives the move to the next apartment, and it is the one almost nobody writes about, because it takes more thought than a list of appliances.
1. A wall hanging made for two. AVAHA WEDDING (THB 1,490) is our couple's wall hanging, 18" x 43", made from wood, cotton rope and dried flowers, 100% natural. The name is Pali for marriage. There is custom sizing if the couple has a particular wall in mind.
It is the ถวายของเป็นคู่ idea expressed as a single object, which is why it works so well as a wedding piece rather than general home decor.

For the couple's anniversaries in the years ahead, see our wedding anniversary gift ideas.
2. A cotton malai with real dried flowers. Malai Petite Flowers (THB 1,890) is white cotton threaded by hand with real dried flowers.
Its product page reminds us that jasmine is offered for pure love and that ดอกรัก (crown flower) carries the word for love in its name, which makes it a warm congratulation for the couple.

A word on garlands, because it is worth being precise. A guest does not supply the ceremonial garland. In the พิธีมงคลสมรส procedure set out by the Royal Thai Army chaplaincy, มาลัย ๒ พวง sit on the host's checklist, and the presiding elder places them on the couple during รดน้ำสังข์.
The correct ceremonial form is มาลัยสองชาย, traditionally made with ดอกรัก (enduring love), ดอกบานไม่รู้โรย (love that never withers), ดอกกุหลาบ and sometimes ดอกมะลิ.
If you are the couple, our Malai Bao Sao is a cotton pair in that two-tailed form, made in your wedding colours, to hang on your wedding photo afterwards.

A cotton malai from a guest is a different thing: a congratulation gift, ของขวัญแสดงความยินดี, given the way a garland is generally given in Thailand, to show respect and congratulation to someone you hold dear.
Its whole point is that it does not wilt like the fresh ones the family ordered. If you want the background, we covered what a พวงมาลัย actually means in its own article.
3. A smaller malai in the couple's colours. MALAI CUTY (THB 890) is 4" x 9", 100% cotton and dried flowers, plastic free, arrives in an eco paper gift box with a free greeting card, and we make custom colour themes for weddings on request.

Pink is the recommended garland colour for weddings and engagements, for sweet and lasting love. White is kept for ไหว้ผู้ใหญ่ (paying respect to elders).
If you are the couple, the gifts you give the elders at the rap wai ceremony are in our guide to khong rap wai, Thai wedding gifts for elders.
For a smaller budget, Malai Petite Purity White starts at THB 1,290, and Malai Glin Rak (มาลัยกลิ่นรัก, "the scent of love") is a cotton garland in a wooden gift box at THB 499.
They all live in the cotton malai collection if you want to compare sizes.

4. A set of two for the new table. Handmade cotton coasters, set of two (THB 490) is one coaster each. It is small, it fits a colleague's budget without any awkwardness, and it goes home in a taxi without a discussion.
If you want something small with more Thai meaning behind it, see the list of 20 Thailand souvenirs with prices.

All the cotton work is handmade by Akha women in Chiang Rai through Akha Ma-De, our social program.
On personalisation: we can engrave the wooden gift box or a custom tag (the engraving goes on the box and the tag, not on the garland itself), match custom colours, add custom tags, include a free greeting card with your handwritten message, and add a gift box on request.
There is no minimum order. Everything is made to order, which means 10 to 20 business days as standard and about a month if you want personalisation. If your wedding is sooner than that, message us and we will tell you honestly what we can do in your timeframe.
Home for the new house
This is where most guests start, so treat it as the reliable option rather than the memorable one, and check first that the couple has actually just moved. If they have, our guide to housewarming gifts has 20 ideas with good meaning and the merit-ceremony etiquette.
5. A lucky plant in a pot (THB 300 to 800). Cheap, alive, and it suits a couple setting up a first place together.
6. A decorative piece for the living room (THB 1,000 to 2,500). The one group where the pair convention is easy to apply: two vases or two candlesticks rather than one of each.
7. A matching tableware set (THB 500 to 1,500). Two of everything, by design. Safe, used often, and hard to get wrong.
Things a couple actually uses
8. Small homeware such as glasses, cushions or towels (THB 200 to 500). The honest budget option, and there is nothing wrong with it when the envelope is doing the heavy lifting.
9. A custom photo keepsake (from THB 2,000). Worth it when you have a good photo of the two of them and time to have it made.
10. One larger gift from the whole team. The budget depends on what you set between you. This is the neat answer to the colleague problem, because pooling turns five uncertain 500 baht decisions into one good gift.
Agree in advance who is also putting an envelope in, so nobody is caught out at the door.
Experiences
11. Dinner or a night away, booked in their names. Budget is whatever you set. Keep the dates flexible, because the week after a wedding nobody wants a fixed booking.
12. Something they do together, a class or a day out. Again, the budget depends on what you set. It gives them a second occasion rather than a second object, which is the whole appeal.
What not to give as a wedding gift (ของขวัญแต่งงาน), and why
These are ความเชื่อ about gifts between partners that a lot of people extend to weddings. They are beliefs, not rules, and plenty of Thai couples do not mind at all. They are worth knowing mainly so you are not the person who hands over the one item somebody's auntie will comment on.
ของมีคม, anything sharp. Start here, because this is the strongest of them and the most relevant to a wedding. Knife blocks and kitchen sets are exactly what a guest reaches for when buying for a new home, and the reading is cutting the relationship.
Shoes. Also strong. They point at one person walking away from the other.
ผ้าเช็ดหน้า, a handkerchief. Strong, and for the obvious reason: tears and parting.
Fragrance. Milder. The idea is love fading the way a scent fades.
Clocks. Genuinely divided, and we will not pretend otherwise. The objection is that a clock suggests the relationship's time is counting down. But Thai retailers do recommend clocks as gifts and a great many people are entirely relaxed about it. Read the family.
A comb. The gaps between the teeth are read as distance between two people.
And if you have already bought the knife set, there is a standard วิธีแก้เคล็ด: the person receiving it hands back one baht, which turns the gift into a purchase rather than a gift and cancels the omen. It costs one baht, everyone laughs, and that is usually the end of it.
Worth knowing too that in some Thai-Chinese families, black or white wrapping paper is avoided at auspicious events. Coloured paper is an easy sidestep.
Wedding gift questions Thai guests ask
What should you give as a wedding gift for a friend?
For a close friend, an envelope of around 2,000 baht is the standard answer and it is never wrong.
If you want to hand over something as well, choose a piece made for two rather than a general household item, since that is what separates a wedding present from a housewarming one.
A couple's wall hanging at THB 1,490 or a set of two coasters at THB 450 both sit comfortably in that range depending on how much of your budget the envelope is already taking.
If you bring a gift, do you still need to put money in an envelope?
Not as a double obligation, no. Thai guidance treats the gift as what you bring when you are unsure how much to put in the envelope, not as something you add on top of a full one.
The envelope is the default and the safe choice, so if you only do one thing, do that. A gift works either instead of the envelope, or alongside a smaller envelope when you are close enough to the couple to want something personal with your name on it.
The one combination to avoid is a lovely gift and no envelope at a wedding where the family is close to you, because many families record who gave what, and a gift does not go in that notebook.
How much should a wedding gift cost?
Budget for ของขวัญงานแต่ง generally runs from 500 to 5,000 baht depending on how close you are to the couple.
The most common guideline is 2 to 5 percent of your monthly income, and by career stage that works out at 500 to 1,000 for first jobbers, 1,000 to 3,000 mid career and 3,000 to 5,000 for senior people.
Whichever number you land on, check it against the floor: with 2026 hotel catering running around 1,100 baht per head, you want to cover the cost of feeding you.
What should you not give as a wedding gift?
The commonly avoided items are sharp objects, shoes, handkerchiefs, fragrance and combs, each for a reason about cutting, leaving, crying or drifting apart.
Clocks are genuinely disputed, with plenty of Thai retailers happily recommending them. All of this is ความเชื่อ rather than rule, so judge the family, and if you have already bought something on the list, the recipient hands you back one baht and the omen is cancelled.
What is the difference between a wedding gift and a wedding favour?
A wedding gift (ของขวัญแต่งงาน) is what you, the guest, give to the couple. ของชำร่วย runs in the opposite direction: it is the small favour the couple hands out to guests as a thank you on the day. If you are the one holding the invitation, the first one is your job and the second one is theirs.
Can you give a garland as a wedding gift, and what kind?
Yes, as a congratulation gift, and it is worth being clear that this is not the ceremonial garland.
The ceremonial มาลัยสองชาย is on the host's checklist and the presiding elder places it on the couple during รดน้ำสังข์, so it is not something a guest supplies.
What a guest can give is a garland as an expression of respect and congratulation, and pink is the recommended colour for weddings and engagements, for sweet and lasting love, while white belongs to ไหว้ผู้ใหญ่.
A cotton one has the advantage of still being there long after the fresh flowers have gone.
