Our elephant keychain is knotted by hand in cotton and finished with a premium hook. It is small, flat and unbreakable, which makes it the easiest thing to carry home and the easiest thing to give.
Most elephant souvenirs sold in Thailand are imported and finished in a factory. This one is made in a village in Chiang Rai, by women whose names we publish.

Why the Elephant Is the Symbol of Thailand
The elephant is inseparable from Thai culture. It stands for strength and wisdom, and it has carried kings, hauled teak, and fought in war across centuries of Thai history.
The white elephant carries the most weight of all. It represents royal power and prosperity, and by tradition a white elephant found in the kingdom belongs to the king. It appeared on the national flag of Siam until 1917.
This is why an elephant keychain is not a generic tourist trinket in Thailand. It is the one object that carries the country's own idea of itself, which is what makes it work as a gift to someone from abroad.
How to Tell a Handmade Thai Elephant from an Imported One
Most elephants sold to visitors in Thailand were not made in Thailand. Here is how to tell, whoever you end up buying from.
- Price. The clearest signal. An imported elephant keychain costs around 30 to 50 THB wholesale. One genuinely handmade in Thailand costs several times that, because someone was paid to make it.
- Look at two of them side by side. Handmade pieces are never identical. The knots sit slightly differently, the proportions shift a little. Machine-made pieces match exactly.
- Material. Natural cotton, silk or hand-dyed fabric ages and softens. Polyester and resin stay stiff and shiny.
- Ask who made it. This is the question that separates everyone. A seller who buys wholesale cannot answer it. A maker can name the village, and often the person.

Keychain or Fridge Magnet
The same elephant is made in two finishes. The keychain comes with a premium hook and goes on keys, a bag or a rear-view mirror. The fridge magnet version has no hook and sits flat. Contact us for Fridge magnet enquiries.
If you are buying for someone abroad, the magnet travels better in a wallet or a coat pocket and there is nothing to catch. If it is for yourself or for keys, take the keychain.
Elephants as Gifts and Favours
The cotton elephant works as a gift for a foreign friend because the story fits in one sentence and the object fits in hand luggage. It weighs almost nothing and cannot break.
