What Is a Coaster, and What Do Thai People Call It?

A coaster is the small mat you put under a glass or a coffee cup.

In Thai it goes by three names that all mean the same object: thi rong kaeo (a glass rest), chan rong kaeo (a glass saucer) and phaen rong kaeo (a glass mat).

In English you will also see it written as a drink coaster.

Which Coaster Suits You? Cotton, Ceramic, Cork and Silicone Compared

If you are choosing a coaster, start with the material.

This table sums up what outside sources say about each one, cotton's own limits included.

Material Good points Watch out for
Cotton (ours) Hand washable, hand-knotted, in 5 colourways or a custom colour. Can stain, and stains can be hard to wash out. In hot, humid weather cotton can grow mildew if it stays damp, so let it dry fully.
Ceramic / diatomite Ceramic is hard, and diatomite is light. Can break if dropped, and strong coffee or tea can stain ceramic.
Cork Light, and it softens the sound when you set a glass down. Can become brittle or crumble over a very long time.
Silicone Durable. Can carry an odour, and mould can build up in the grooves.

Pick cotton when you want a coaster you can hand wash, in colours you choose yourself. Ours are Ø10.5 cm, sold as a pair, at 490 baht.

How to Care for Cotton Coasters

  • Hand wash, then let them dry fully after every wash or spill
  • Every piece is handmade, so sizes vary slightly and no two are identical. That is the nature of handwork

Coasters as Souvenirs and Favours

Cotton coasters work well as a gift for a foreign friend, because they fit in hand luggage, and the person actually uses them every day.

For weddings, retirements and company events, coasters are the favour guests take home and keep using.

Choose colours to match your theme, and add engraving or a logo tag.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coasters

How do you wash a cotton coaster?

Hand wash it, then let it dry fully every time.

Do cotton coasters go mouldy?

Cotton can grow mildew in hot, humid weather if it stays damp. The US EPA notes that damp materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will, in most cases, stay free of mould, so let your coasters dry fully after every wash or spill.
