What Is a Christmas Stocking? Meaning, Legend and Where to Hang It
What is a Christmas stocking (ถุงเท้าคริสต์มาส)

A Christmas stocking is a large sock hung up as a decoration at Christmas and filled with small gifts to be opened on Christmas morning. In Western homes it hangs by the fireplace. In Thailand it is usually hung on the Christmas tree, on a wall, or at the head of a bed.
The meaning and the legend behind it
Where it comes from. The legend tells of Saint Nicholas, who wanted to help a poor family with three daughters and no dowry. He dropped bags of gold down the chimney at night, and the gold landed in the stockings that had been left to dry by the fireplace.
What children believe. On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus fills the stockings that have been hung out with gifts, sweets and small toys.
What it symbolises. Generosity, sharing, surprise, and the happiness of a family together.
The stocking waits for the night Santa's sleigh lands on the roof. For the names of all nine reindeer and the year Rudolph joined, read the names of Santa's nine reindeer.
Why English says stocking and never sock
English always calls it a stocking, never a sock. A sock stops at the ankle. A stocking is a long knitted legging that reaches above the knee, which is what people actually hung by the fireplace at the time, and it is large enough to hold real gifts. Thai uses one word, ถุงเท้า (thung thao), for both, so the distinction disappears in translation.
How many types are there, and which size should you buy

Decide where it will hang before you buy, because the two sizes are not interchangeable.
- Large stockings, 35 to 50 cm. For a fireplace, a wall or a bedhead. They hold several real gifts. Best if you have empty wall space.
- Mini stockings, 6 to 10 cm. For hanging on the branches of a Christmas tree, holding a chocolate, a coin, a note or one small gift. You can hang many of them across a whole tree, and this is the size used most in offices and for Secret Santa draws.
The mini size is the one we make: Santa's Sock, handmade cotton, 6 x 7.5 cm (THB 199), knitted by hand, open at the top so you can slip something inside, and made to be kept and reused every year.
Where to hang a Christmas stocking in a home with no fireplace

Thai homes almost never have a fireplace, which is the spot the tradition assumes. These work instead.
- On the tree branches. The easiest place for mini stockings. Spread them across the tree, one per person.
- On a stair rail or a shelf edge. The stand-in for a mantelpiece. Line them up so they are visible.
- At the head of a child's bed. The closest spot to them, and the first thing they see on Christmas morning.
- On a door handle or a window hook. For a condo with no tree.
- On a desk or an office door. One mini stocking per desk, and it doubles as the Secret Santa wrapping.
What to put in a Christmas stocking
Keep it small and light so the branch or the hook can take the weight.
- Foil-wrapped chocolate, sweets or a small cookie
- A coin or a folded banknote, following the original Saint Nicholas legend
- A handwritten note, a wish, or a clue leading to a bigger gift
- Small everyday things: a hair tie, a lip balm, stickers, a pen
- Another ornament, so the person can hang it on their own tree
Make one yourself or buy one
Making one. Cut two stocking shapes out of felt, sew three sides closed, leave the top open, and stitch a loop to the corner. It takes about half an hour per stocking and works well as an activity with children. The limitation is that felt is synthetic and the cut edges tend to fray after one season in storage.
Buying a handmade one. If you intend to reuse it every year, a knitted cotton stocking holds its shape and its colour far longer, and stores flat in a box without creasing.
