Tula Garland: A Cotton Blessing for a Newborn
In Pali, tula means cotton. In Thailand, cotton is also a baby's first blessing: at the ทำขวัญเด็กแรกเกิด (welcoming ceremony for a newborn), the family ties raw cotton thread around the baby's wrists and speaks their wishes.
The Tula Garland carries that blessing to the nursery wall: a newborn gift in hand-knotted cotton, made to welcome a new life and stay in the family for years.

How do you care for a cotton garland?
A little care keeps the Tula Garland soft and bright for years on the nursery wall.
- Handle it gently. Cotton fringes tangle easily; touch them lightly.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. Direct sun fades cotton over time.
- Keep it dry. Avoid rooms with high humidity.
- Dust it regularly. Brush it lightly with a soft brush or a cloth, and comb the fringes with your fingers.
Cotton, a newborn's first blessing in Thailand
Before a Thai baby receives toys or clothes, it often receives a thread. At the ทำขวัญเด็กแรกเกิด (welcoming ceremony for a newborn), elders stroke the baby's arms with สายสิญจน์ (sacred raw cotton thread) to brush away misfortune, then tie a thread around both wrists while speaking their blessings.
The name Tula carries the same material. In Pali, the language of the Buddhist scriptures read in Thailand, tūla means cotton.
