What the saffron colour carries
Saffron orange is the colour Thailand recognises instantly. It is the colour of the robe, and through it the colour of renunciation, discipline and a life ordered around something larger than comfort.
Given as a gift, it is a quiet compliment. It says you see those qualities in the person receiving it, and that is a heavier thing to say than most gifts manage.
When to give it
- To a teacher or a mentor, as an expression of respect for what they have passed on.
- To an elder whose judgement you have relied on.
- At an ordination, to the family marking the occasion.
- To someone beginning again, a new job, a move, a change of direction.
One honest note on what this piece is not for. A garland offered on an altar to a Buddha image should be fresh, and Thai practice guides are specific about it: an offering flower should have good colour, fragrance and freshness. Dried flowers and cotton, or fresh
A fresh garland is beautiful for a day and gone by the evening. That is right for a ceremony that ends at lunchtime, and it costs very little at the flower market.
This one is for the moment the recipient is meant to keep. It holds its shape and colour for years, it travels by post, and it does not leave the person you just honoured with something to throw away.
How to care for it
- Handle it gently. Dried flowers and cotton are delicate. Keep handling to a minimum.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. Direct sun fades both dried flowers and cotton. Somewhere dry and cool is best.
- Keep it dry. Damp causes mould, which damages dried flowers and cotton alike.
- Dust it regularly with a soft brush or a cloth.
Cared for properly, it stays beautiful for many years.
