The circle, and why Thai calls it พวงหรีด
A circle has no beginning and no end. That is the whole of it, and it is why the wreath survived every century that tried to change it.
Thai says it more bluntly than English does. In Thailand, พวงหรีด is the word for the flower wreath sent to a funeral. The same word, for the thing you hang on your Christmas tree.
That is not a mistake or a bad translation. It is the same symbol, used at the two moments a family most needs it. At a funeral the circle says a life is honoured and does not simply stop. At Christmas it says the same thing from the other direction: life continuing, leaves staying green through winter, light coming back.
English quietly does this too. One word, wreath, for both. A Christmas wreath and a funeral wreath are the same object wearing a different mood.
So when you hang a wreath on your tree, you are not borrowing anything from anywhere. You are using the oldest shape we have for the one idea nobody has improved on.
A wreath made for a branch, not a door
Almost every Christmas wreath sold in Thailand is built for a front door. Shopee lists them at 30 cm. Pimarn sells the CM01 at 40 cm. Lazada goes up to 45 cm. They all need a door, a hook, and somewhere to store them in January, and most of them are plastic.
Ours is 9.5 cm. Cotton, hand knotted, made to hang from a branch, which is where a wreath this size actually belongs.
