Santa Claus has a team of 9 reindeer pulling his sleigh. Their names come from the poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, as well as Christmas songs that mention Santa’s reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder, Blixem, and Rudolph.
Rudolph, the last of these reindeer, was born different from the others because his nose was bright red and could glow. Rudolph often felt different from the herd and was frequently teased because of it. As the youngest and least experienced reindeer, he was usually placed near the back of the team when pulling Santa’s sleigh. Outside of his work with Santa Claus, Rudolph often spent much of his time alone and separated from the other reindeer.
One night before Christmas, a powerful snowstorm covered the area, while thick fog made it almost impossible to see the way ahead. Santa Claus considered cancelling his journey to deliver presents to the children. Then he noticed Rudolph’s bright red nose glowing through the fog and snowstorm. Santa called Rudolph to the very front of the team so he could guide the way, allowing Santa Claus to successfully deliver all the presents that night.
From that night on, Rudolph became Santa’s leading reindeer and was no longer teased by the others. The lesson behind this story is that “the world creates each of us differently so that we can help one another.”
