The History of Christmas Lollipops: A Festive Sweet Everyone Looks Forward To
The story of Christmas lollipops goes back hundreds of years. One of the best-known forms is the candy cane, with its shape resembling the letter “J.” Some traditions associate this with the name of Jesus. In earlier times, sugar was an expensive ingredient and was considered a luxury, meaning children usually enjoyed sweets only on special occasions.
According to one story, a priest wanted to create extra happiness for everyone during Christmas. Along with the beautiful Christmas decorations in the church, he bought sugar and cooked it until it became thick and pliable. White candy was flavored with mint and red candy with strawberry, then both colors were shaped into long strips and twisted together. The candy was cut into pieces and curved at one end like a shepherd’s staff before being handed out to people visiting the church as a Christmas gift. The sweets brought great happiness and smiles to everyone.
From then on, giving candy canes became a popular Christmas tradition among Christians and something children looked forward to. Over time, sugar became easier to obtain and more affordable, allowing sweets to become more accessible to families.
Candy canes therefore became more than just Christmas decorations that children could hang on the Christmas Tree (The Pine Tree). Many families also began making real candy at home to enjoy together or give to others. Eventually, Christmas sweets developed into many different flavors, colors, and shapes.
