Long before Christmas trees became popular, people in Europe were already bringing holly into their homes during winter. Because its leaves stayed green through the cold months, holly became a symbol of life, hope, and the return of spring.
Later, holly became closely connected with Christmas. In Christian tradition, its prickly leaves were linked to the crown of thorns, while its red berries symbolized the blood of Christ.
Today, those bright red berries and deep green leaves are simply impossible to separate from Christmas.
