How do you care for a Khruang Kwaen?
Caring for your Khruang Kwaen is what keeps it beautiful and keeps it looking new for years. Hung in a living room, an entrance or a bedroom, it deserves attention. Here is how to look after yours properly.
- Handle it gently. Always treat the piece with a light touch. Cotton is delicate and damages easily. Keep handling to a minimum.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. Direct sun fades cotton. Hang it away from a window that catches the full afternoon sun.
- Keep it dry. Damp causes mould and mildew, which damages cotton. Avoid hanging it anywhere with high humidity.
- Dust it regularly. Dust settles on cotton and makes a piece look dull. Brush it lightly with a soft brush or a cloth to lift dust and cobwebs away.
Cared for properly, your Khruang Kwaen stays beautiful in its place for many years.

What is a Khruang Kwaen?
A Khruang Kwaen is a Thai hanging flower ornament, the original Thai chandelier. The craft has been practised since the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, and the strands of flowers it is built from appear in the stucco motifs decorating Thai architecture of the time. Traditionally it is strung from auspicious fresh flowers such as jasmine, dok rak, gardenia and globe amaranth, and hung in a doorway or a window, where it decorated the room and scented it at the same time.
It is one of the oldest ideas in Thai home decoration: a piece that is beautiful to look at and carries a fragrance through the house.
Glin Chorakhe, the crocodile pattern
Crocodile Fragrance takes its name from glin chorakhe, one of the traditional flat Khruang Kwaen patterns, alongside glin tang, glin jeen and wiman phra in. The pattern is built from three diamond shapes stacked one above the other, the middle one slightly larger, and the silhouette that results is what gives the crocodile its name.
Our version keeps the pattern and changes the material. Cotton fibres take the place of the jasmine, so the piece holds its shape and its colour for years instead of a single day.

Fresh flower work has to be remade constantly, which is why so much of it now appears only at weddings and ceremonies. Made in cotton, the Crocodile Fragrance belongs in a home you actually live in.
