The tradition of the Christmas stocking comes from an old legend about Saint Nicholas. Wanting to secretly help a poor family, he left gold for three daughters, which was said to have fallen into stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry.
Over time, families began hanging stockings on Christmas Eve, hoping Saint Nicholas, and later Santa Claus, would fill them with small gifts and treats.

Why it is a "stocking" and not a "sock"
In English the Christmas one is always called a stocking, never a sock, and the difference is real.
A sock stops at the ankle. A stocking is a long knitted legging that reaches over the knee, which is what people wore in the 1800s and what they hung by the fire at night to dry. Saint Nicholas filled what was already hanging there. The name stayed long after the garment disappeared from daily life.
Thai has a single word, ถุงเท้า, for both. That is why shoppers in Thailand search for ถุงเท้าคริสต์มาส while the label on the box says Christmas stocking. Both point at the same object.
From the fireplace to the tree
The tradition needed a fireplace, and almost no home in Thailand has one. So it adapted. The stocking shrank and moved onto the tree, where it hangs from a branch instead of a mantelpiece.
That is what this one is. 6 x 7.5 cm, cotton, hand knotted, sized for a branch. Most Christmas stockings sold in Thailand are 37 x 52 cm and built for a wall you do not have.
Something small hidden inside
A miniature stocking is a hiding place, and that is the point of it. It holds one square of chocolate, a folded note, a ring, a coin, a wrapped sweet, a small charm. Hang it, fill it, and let somebody find it.
- A Christmas morning surprise. Hide a small gift in one stocking on the tree and let the children work out which branch it is on.
- An advent tree. Several hiding places on the same tree, one opened each evening.
- Instead of a ribbon. Tie it to a wrapped present with a chocolate inside, so the gift starts before the paper comes off.
The stocking is not the only one you can fill, and each one takes a different size of secret. Santa's Bag is the smallest at 6 x 6 cm, just deep enough for a coin or a folded note. Santa's Glove at 9 x 8 cm holds a real candy. And Santa's Mug is the greedy one, three or four sweets at once. Hang all four and the tree becomes a game rather than a decoration.
