Handmade Christmas Ornaments by Akha Women in Chiang Rai

Macrame by Nicha's Christmas ornaments are handmade by Akha women in Chiang Rai, through our AKHA MA-DE social program. We have worked with the same community since 2021, and every order pays for more hours of work in the village.

They are made primarily from cotton, as a deliberate alternative to plastic and mass production. Over 100 designs, from THB 159. Each one is knotted by hand, so no two are identical.

Recognised with first prize in the SME category at the UN Women WEPs Awards, the EXO Foundation Gold Prize 2025, and selection for SACIT Concept 2025 and 2026. We are a member of Social Enterprise Thailand.

Why cotton and not plastic

Most Christmas decorations sold in Thailand are imported plastic, made in volume, thrown away in January and replaced the following year.

We work in cotton for three reasons. It can be knotted by hand, which is what makes production in a village possible at all. It does not shatter, so it survives a box, a suitcase and a curious cat. And it comes back out every December instead of going in a bin, which is the honest version of the environmental argument.

The result is an ornament with something to say. A Muay Thai mongkhon or a woven fish on a Christmas tree is a piece with a story attached, and it could not have come from anywhere else.

Who makes these, and what it pays for

Every piece is knotted by hand by Akha women in Asha village, Mae Yao district, Chiang Rai, through AKHA MA-DE, our social program, running since 2021.

The Akha are an indigenous community in northern Thailand. The work is done in the village, which means a woman does not have to leave her family to earn. Our aim is straightforward: bring more Akha women into the program each year, so more families have a steady income and the cycle of poverty is broken rather than passed on.

Custom orders and corporate

We customise our own designs with engraving and logo work, and there is no minimum order. We are not a contract manufacturer, so we do not produce other people's designs.

Frequently asked questions

Where are these Christmas ornaments made?

In Asha village, Mae Yao district, Chiang Rai, in northern Thailand. They are designed and produced by Macrame by Nicha and knotted by hand by Akha women through our AKHA MA-DE program.

What are they made from?

Primarily cotton, combined with other natural materials depending on the design. Wood, rattan and natural fibre appear in some pieces. No plastic.

How much do handmade Christmas ornaments cost?

Ours start at THB 159 and most sit between THB 159 and THB 269. Table pieces such as coasters and napkin rings are THB 490 a pair, and boxed gift sets start at THB 1,472.

Can I have my logo or a name added?

Yes, on pieces from our own range, with engraving and logo work and no minimum order.
