Christmas Holly — A Symbol of Love for God
Christmas holly is one of the plants most closely associated with the Christmas season. Christians traditionally arrange holly into bouquets or wreaths to decorate their homes during the festive period. It has long been believed that using holly as a Christmas decoration expresses the love Christians have for God. The leaves and berries of the holly plant also carry important symbolic meanings, which we will explore in this article.
Christmas Holly — An Expression of Christians’ Love for God
Christmas holly is directly associated with the Christmas season, just like other familiar symbols such as mistletoe, Christmas Mushroom (The Forest'Mush) Christmas Golden Bell with Ribbon (The Ribbon Twist) and snowmen. The holly plant also naturally features the traditional Christmas colors: green leaves and red berries.
The dark green leaves symbolize eternal life, while the bright red berries are said to represent the blood of Jesus shed on the cross. The thorny shape of the leaves is also used as a reminder of the crown of thorns placed on Christ’s head. Because of these characteristics, Christians came to regard holly as a meaningful plant to arrange and display as an expression of love for Jesus.
Holly is not only meaningful because of its symbolism. Its natural characteristics also reinforce this meaning. Holly is an evergreen plant that can tolerate cold weather well, allowing it to remain green throughout the year. Its bright red berries can also appear during the year, although they should not be eaten because they contain substances that are toxic to humans.
Because holly is an evergreen plant able to survive difficult weather conditions, Christians have traditionally associated its leaves and berries with eternal life, just like their everlasting love for Christ.
Christmas Holly — A Plant Loved by Many, but in Need of Protection
Because of its strong connection with Christianity and Christmas, holly has traditionally been cut and used as a Christmas decoration every year. It can be made into garlands and bouquets or hung on Christmas trees together with other decorations such as Christmas Beads (The Secret Bead) and Christmas Bell.
In some areas, heavy harvesting of holly for Christmas decorations has created concerns about conservation, particularly where plants have been cut faster than they can naturally recover. This has led to protection measures in certain regions to preserve wild holly populations.
In Thailand, artificial Christmas holly decorations are also available, allowing people to enjoy the traditional Christmas look without cutting natural holly plants. These alternatives can still beautifully represent the symbolism of holly and the everlasting love associated with Christmas.
