What Is a Muay Thai Mongkol?
The mongkol, มงคล (the Thai word for what brings prosperity), is the ceremonial headband a kru, ครูมวย (Muay Thai teacher), places on a fighter's head for the walk to the ring and for the wai kru, the pre-fight ritual of gratitude to the teacher.
The ring mongkol is the kru's to give, once they judge the fighter ready, and in most camps it stays with the gym. That one is beyond anyone's shop counter.
Our cotton version is a miniature, made as a way to keep the symbol close and honour it: carried high, kept off the ground, the way the tradition asks. The whole story, including who may own one, is in our guide to the Muay Thai mongkol and its rituals.
What the Three Colours Mean
The Thai flag has its own name: ไตรรงค์ (Trairong, "the tricolour"). It was introduced in 1917 (พ.ศ. 2460) under King Vajiravudh, Rama VI.
Thai Wikipedia's entry ธงชาติไทย (the national flag of Thailand) records the official meaning of each colour:
- Red stands for the blood given for the nation
- White stands for the purity of the Triple Gem and the Buddhist teaching
- Blue is the King's own colour
That is why all three are knotted together through the whole piece: the tricolour stays whole, from the loop of the headband to the tassel, wherever the keychain hangs.
Who This Is For
This is the more finished of our two mongkol keychains, at 390 THB, with a cotton tassel and the colour carried all the way through. If you prefer the plainer shape, our cotton mongkol keychain at 350 THB is knotted by the same hands.
It travels well as a gift: a welcome piece when a gym opens its doors, a small thank you around a competition, something to hand the trainer who has corrected your guard for a year. 6 February is วันมวยไทย (National Muay Thai Day), which is another good moment for it.
