Why a new car gets a garland in Thailand
In Thai belief, every vehicle has a guardian spirit, Mae Ya Nang. She watches over the car and the people inside it. When you take delivery of a new car, you greet her: you present garlands, make a small offering, and ask for safe travels and good fortune on every road.
That is why you see garlands hanging inside cars all over Thailand. It is not decoration. It is a blessing that stays with the car.
How many garlands for a new car
The common form is three garlands of the two-tailed type, the malai song chai, the garland with an ubae tassel hanging at each end. One is often placed at the front of the car for the ceremony, and a garland stays inside afterwards, usually at the rear-view mirror.
You will see one, three, five or nine used, always odd numbers. Three is the number most guides agree on for a new car.
Which colour, by your day of birth
In Thailand every day of the week has its own colour, from the deity watching over that day. The colour of the day you were born is yours for life, and choosing it for your car blessing is believed to strengthen the fortune you are asking for.

A traditional fresh garland carries its meaning in its flowers:

The offering, step by step
The common form of the Mae Ya Nang offering:
- 9 incense sticks per person making the offering
- The garlands, placed at the front of the car
- Fresh fruit: bananas, oranges, red dragon fruit, pomegranate or coconut
- Plain water and rice
- Light the incense, state your name, ask Mae Ya Nang for protection and good fortune
- Wait for the incense to burn down, around 20 to 30 minutes, then give thanks and close
Beyond the day you take delivery, people renew the blessing at New Year, at Songkran, and at Chinese New Year.
Fresh or permanent: what actually hangs in the car
A fresh garland is the traditional offering for the ceremony itself, and for the ceremony it is the right choice. It carries scent, and it is meant to be given, not kept.
The garland that stays in the car is a different question. Thai heat turns fresh jasmine within a day, and a dashboard is the hottest place the garland will ever hang.
