Turndown Gifts and Welcome Gifts for Hotels, Handmade in Thailand

A turndown gift is the small present a hotel leaves in the room during evening turndown service, when the bed is prepared for the night.

If you are a hotel or event buyer looking for turndown gifts and hotel welcome gifts in Thailand that guests actually keep, this guide covers what to give, what it costs in real THB, and exactly who makes it.

What is a turndown gift, and why hotels are moving beyond the pillow chocolate

Turndown Gifts and Welcome Gifts for Hotels in Thailand - Made by Akha Women in Chiang Rai - The Pla Ta Pian Christmas

A turndown gift is a small amenity placed in the guest room during turndown service, traditionally a chocolate or a sweet on the pillow. It is a quiet way of saying "we thought of you" at the end of the guest's day.

The classic version disappears by morning. Chocolates, fruit, and flowers are lovely, but they are consumed and gone, and they carry no trace of the hotel or the destination.

That is changing. Travel media have picked up a clear trend: Forbes reported in July 2026 that luxury hotels are sending guests home with memorable, locally made gifts, and turndown listicles now celebrate local ceramics, worry dolls, and hand-painted crafts rather than sweets.

  • The winning idea everywhere is the same: a locally made, handcrafted, sense-of-place keepsake instead of a wrapper in the bin.

A handmade cotton piece does exactly that. It travels home in a suitcase, hangs on a wall or a tree, and carries your hotel's name for years.

And here is the detail we love most, the one guests remember: a small story card on the nightstand next to the gift, so the guest reads who made their gift, an Akha artisan working from her home in Chiang Rai. That is the moment a room amenity becomes a story your guest tells at home.

Why Thai hotels are rethinking amenity gifts right now

Thai Welcome Gifts & Turndown Gifts - Mini Malai Diffuser - Akha Ma-De

Two pressures are meeting at once in Thai hospitality, and both point toward handmade.

  • First, plastic. Thailand's Plastic Waste Management Roadmap is phasing out single-use plastics nationwide,

and Thai hotels are moving ahead of it voluntarily: the Thai Hotels Association runs a plastic-free program, and hundreds of hotels have pledged to cut single-use plastic amenities.

  • Second, culture. More than 500 Thai hotels have signed the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge, committing to eliminate single-use plastic and promote local culture.

Notice that the pledge has two halves: plastic out, local culture in. A natural cotton keepsake made by a named community in Chiang Rai answers both halves with one object.

That is why buyers searching for sustainable hotel amenity gifts increasingly land on craft, not toiletries.

There is a guest-experience half too: a guest discards a wrapper, but keeps a craft piece. If you want the longer version of our thinking on materials, we wrote about why we choose cotton over plastic in a dedicated comparison guide.

Turndown gifts and hotel welcome gifts from Thailand, with real prices

Turndown Gifts and Welcome Gifts for Hotels in Thailand - Made by Akha Women in Chiang Rai - Elephant Keychains

Everything below is handmade in natural cotton and made to order. Prices are per piece guides from our store, and hotel orders are quoted per project based on quantity and customization.

Turndown tier, THB 159 to 550. Small, light, and easy to place on a pillow or nightstand:

Welcome and VIP tier, THB 499 to 4,555. Our contemporary Phuang Malai, the traditional Thai garland of welcome and respect, reimagined in cotton so it never wilts:

  • Malai Glin Rak, THB 499, the entry point to the welcome tier.
  • Malai Petite Purity, THB 1,290, part of our premium Phuang Malai range.
  • Malai Petite Flowers, THB 1,890.
  • Malai Supreme Flowers, THB 2,690.
  • Malai Princess Purity THB 4,555, for the VIP guests

A real flower malai is beautiful for a day. A cotton malai greets your VIP at check-in and then goes home in their suitcase. We tell that whole story in the story of the everlasting malai.

Seasonal: for the festive season, the Christmas Malai (THB 199) bridges both tiers, a Thai garland in Christmas colours. And for conference bags and event giveaways, our cotton keychains are quoted per order.

Does that sit inside a real hotel budget?

Hotel asset manager hotelAVE puts turndown service at USD 9.28 per occupied room, two thirds of it labor.

Luxury hotels routinely price arrival amenities like fruit baskets and strawberries at USD 50 to 70 per room.

A THB 159 to 550 turndown piece and a THB 499 to 4,555 welcome piece sit comfortably inside those numbers, and unlike the strawberries, they are still there next year.

Who makes your gifts: Akha women in Chiang Rai

We are a Community of Akha Women Artisans based in Chiang Rai - Thailand

Every piece is made through Akha Ma-De, our social program employing Akha women in Asha village, Mae Yao district, Chiang Rai.

The women work from home, so the craft fits around children and farm work, and it creates steady income for Akha women in their own village.

The program is led by Nicha, an Akha woman leading her own community. That matters: this is not an outside brand "helping" a village, it is a village enterprise with a founder from inside it.

Two markers you can check for yourself: we won first prize in the SME category at the UN Women 2024 Thailand WEPs Awards, and Nichanan A-Ngi is a member of Social Enterprise Thailand.

And one honest boundary, because hotel buyers deserve straight answers: our pieces are natural cotton, but we hold no eco or fair trade certifications. What we offer instead is a named maker. You, and your guest reading the story card on the nightstand, know exactly who made the gift and where. We think that is worth more than a logo, and we would rather tell you plainly than let a label do the talking.

How ordering works for hotels and events

We are made to order, so there is no shop-now checkout for hotel runs. The process is simple:

  1. Request a quote. Tell us your property or event, rough quantities, budget band, and timing.
  2. We send our catalogue and a per-project quote. Per-unit pricing depends on quantity and customization.
  3. Production starts on upfront payment. Lead time is about one month, so plan ahead, especially for the year-end season.

What we can customize, all on our own designs:

  • Custom engraving, your hotel logo or a guest's name.
  • Custom labels, so the piece carries your property's branding.
  • Story cards for the nightstand, introducing the Akha artisan behind the gift.

There is no minimum order quantity. A boutique property trialling 30 turndown pieces is as welcome as a resort ordering for high season, or an agency sourcing MICE welcome gifts for a full conference. And if your brief is wider than hotels, start with our full guide to corporate gifts from Thailand.

Your Bangkok to Chiang Rai connection

Production happens in Chiang Rai, but you do not need to go there. Macrame by Nicha represents the artisans from Bangkok: your quotes, samples, photos, and follow-up are all handled from the capital, in English or Thai.

We already supply 5 star hotels, yachts, embassies, event and travel agencies, so your purchasing team will not be our first.

For hotel and MICE briefs, our gifts and amenities for hotels page is the fastest way to request a quote.

One supplier, one named village, one Bangkok point of contact. That is the whole chain.

Frequently asked questions about turndown and hotel guest gifts

What is a turndown gift in a hotel?

A turndown gift is the small present placed in the guest room during evening turndown service, when housekeeping prepares the bed for the night. Traditionally it was a chocolate on the pillow. Increasingly, hotels leave a locally made keepsake instead, something the guest keeps and takes home, so the gesture outlasts the stay.

How much should a hotel budget per turndown or welcome gift?

For context, hotel asset manager hotelAVE puts turndown service at USD 9.28 per occupied room, two thirds of it labor, and luxury hotels routinely price arrival amenities like fruit baskets at USD 50 to 70 per room. Our handmade turndown tier runs THB 159 to 550 per piece and the welcome and VIP tier THB 499 to 4,555, with hotel orders quoted per project.

Is there a minimum order quantity for hotels?

No. We work made to order with no minimum order quantity, so a boutique hotel trialling a few dozen pieces is as welcome as a resort ordering for a full season. Tell us your quantities, budget, and timing when you request a quote, and we will price the run per project.

How long does a hotel order take?

Plan for about one month of lead time. Every piece is handmade to order by Akha artisans in Chiang Rai, and production starts once the upfront payment is received. If you are ordering for the year-end season, the kindest thing you can do for your timeline is to start the conversation early.

Can you add our hotel logo or a custom label?

Yes. We offer custom engraving with your hotel logo or a guest's name, custom labels carrying your property's branding, and story cards for the nightstand that introduce the artisan who made the gift. All customization is done on our own designs, which is where the handmade character comes from.

Are the gifts certified eco friendly?

Honest answer: no. Our pieces are natural cotton, but we hold no eco or fair trade certifications. What we offer instead is transparency: you know exactly who made your gift, Akha women working from home in Asha village, Mae Yao district, Chiang Rai, and your guest can read it on the story card. We would rather name the maker than print a label.

What works as a turndown gift versus a VIP welcome gift?

Turndown gifts should be small and light: cotton ornaments from THB 159, small dreamcatchers, coasters, or napkin rings up to THB 550. Welcome and VIP gifts should make an entrance: our cotton Phuang Malai garlands from THB 499 to THB 4,555 greet the guest at check-in and then travel home in the suitcase.

Can you supply seasonal gifts for Christmas or Chinese New Year?

Christmas is our home ground: handmade cotton ornaments from THB 159 and the Christmas Malai at THB 199 are made for festive turndown programs. For Chinese New Year and other occasions, tell us your brief when you request a quote and we will say honestly what we can make to order, red is the lucky colour in Chinese tradition and cotton carries it beautifully.

Do you supply MICE events and conferences too?

Yes. We already supply event and travel agencies alongside 5 star hotels, yachts, and embassies. For conferences we quote MICE welcome gifts and giveaways per project, from cotton keychains for delegate bags through to VIP malai for speakers and honoured guests, with custom labels and no minimum order quantity.

Can we visit the workshop?

There is no workshop to visit, and we would rather tell you that plainly: our Akha artisans work from their own homes across Chiang Rai, which is exactly what lets the craft fit around family and farm life. Everything is handled from Bangkok instead, with photos and samples, so you can see and touch the quality before you commit.
